ReVerde is a natural reserve, botanic garden and research farm which specialises in the development of sustainable agricultural production in the Amazon. We envisage an Amazon where landscapes and farmers support one another to increase the provision of ecosystem services. Our mission is to promote the the development and dissemination of sustainable agriculture in the Amazon.

There are over 80 million hectares in the Amazon that has been cleared to make way for cattle pasture. Cattle ranching in the Amazon is not sustainable. In Brazil alone, there are over 30 million hectares of now degraded pastureland.

But cows also eat trees, and trees can increase the sustainability of cattle ranching while helping maintain key services provided by forests. Despite being the most biodiverse place on the planet for plants, nobody knows which rainforest trees cows can eat.

We research plants which can improve the sustainability of livestock production. By using more environmentally friendly ways to increase production we can offer higher returns for farmers who adopt better practices, and in this way we incentivise reforestation.

We don’t just germinate seeds, we incubate ideas.
