Ceiba pentandra (Malvaceae), otherwise known as the Kapok tree, is a deciduous tree which can grow to 70 m tall, making it one of the largest trees in the world. It has a widespread distribution, and is valued across it's range for it's fiber as well as being used in the production of medicines and oils. It is a fast growing tree, tolerant of poor soils, direct sunlight and coppicing. While some anecdotal evidence suggests it's young leaves can be eaten raw by humans, there are no studies examining it's use for livestock production.  It flowers at night, and is primarily pollinated by moths, bats and nocturnal mammals.

Erythrina berteroana (Fabaceae -Papilionoideae) is a tree which can reach 10 m. It is commonly cultivated as a living fence, and it's properties as a nitrogen fixer have made it popular in agroforestry systems. Erythrina are commonly propagated from cuttings, anecdotal reports suggest sticks can even be buried horizontally and still demonstrate excellent survival. Erythrina are palatable to cattle, but there are some doubts about their inclusion in cattle systems due to unknown effects of alkaloids which can even be detected in the milk of animals which browse this species. Nevertheless, the use of these trees are widespread across South America. Suprisingly, there are no reports of their use in cattle production systems in the Amazon.

Inga edulis (Fabaceae - Mimosoideae) is a tree native to South America which can reach 30 m in height. It is known in English as the 'ice cream' bean on account of the delicious pulp which surrounds it's seeds. Cattle seem to find the leaves of this tree palatable, but nothing is yet known about the potential effect on animal health or production. It is a hardy species, and frequently among species found in regenerating areas of Amazonian rainforest. Inga edulis's ability to fix nitrogen from the air into it's root system helps it to outcompete weeds, while it's high levels of leaf litter contribute important nutrients to surrounding soils.
